BBC Toughest Place To Be a Fisherman (2012)

Cornish fisherman Andy Giles gives up his state of the art trawler to travel to the coast of Sierra Leone, where the fishing is done from a dugout canoe. Living in a small community of mud huts, Andy discovers a very different way of life where a bad day's fishing means a hungry family. Even this precarious lifestyle is now under threat from foreign trawlers that fish illegally in the villagers' waters, taking their fish, destroying their nets and sometimes even sinking their canoes, with tragic consequences. Through the international language of the fisherman, Andy develops a lasting friendship with his hosts, in a film which highlights the plight of subsistence fishermen around the world.

BBC Wonderland The Real Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines (2012)

Wonderland s04ep03 The Real Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines
Mon 23 Jan 2012 21:00 BBC Two

Three days flying around the UK in flimsy machines whose engines can cut out at any time:
welcome to the mad, bad and sometimes downright dangerous world of competitive amateur
microlighting in the 'Round Britain Rally'.

For those with the daring, skill and sheer nerves to take it on, the Rally is the ultimate
test, where the aim is to fly around as much of the country as possible. This is flying at
its most basic - and most exhilarating.

This film follows three teams of obsessive microlight enthusiasts who navigate their way
across Britain armed with a map and compass, sleeping under the wing, and doing their best
to keep their aircraft in one piece - while at the same time clocking up more miles than
everyone else.

Microlighters wax lyrical over the poetry of the skies, but they all have tales of brushes
with death. Anxious and despairing families look on in resignation as their much loved men
folk choose to exercise what seems an irrepressible death wish.

Disaster is never much more than a stalled engine away. As one of the pilots says: 'You're
putting your life in the hands of what is effectively a chainsaw attached to a deck chair.'
But that won't stop these enthusiasts from taking to their magnificent flying machines in an
attempt to capture the true spirit of amateur aviation.

BBC Scotland : The Highland Clans [Complete Set] (2007)
Xvid | 624 x 352 | Duration: 29 mins each | Bitrate: 990 Kbps | RS.com

The Highlands and Islands of Scotland have been shaped by centuries of clan history. A past overflowing with countless tales of bloodshed and bravery, rivalry and revenge. Presenter and programme maker Paul Murton makes a personal journey beyond the myths and the tartan to uncover the real story of Scotland's Highland Clans

The series starts with Clan MacGregor. In the 17th century this Highland clan reached such heights of infamy that it was outlawed by the State and the name MacGregor became punishable by death.

After starting with his own MacGregor ancestry in programme one, Paul moves on to explore the defining moments in the histories of the MacDonald, MacLeod, Campbell, Fraser and MacKenzie Clans.

Using historical and modern-day locations, the stunning beauty of Scotland's landscape, the testimony of contemporary accounts and present-day descendants as well as a haunting original score, Paul Murton immerses himself in a thousand years of Highland Clan history and in doing so uncovers some truly gripping stories.

Special highlights include Paul re-enacting the renowned Highland Charge, driving Highland cattle to market, and sailing an ancient Highland galley through the Sound of Mull.

BBC Secrets of the Sexes (2005)

406 BBC Secrets of the Sexes (2005)

Brainsex

Men and women are just the same. Just as caring, just as promiscuous, just as good at a three point turn. Arent they?

The results of a new BBC sex survey of 500,000 people from around the globe the largest ever carried out provide very revealing answers. And five men and five women are put through a unique battery of experiments to uncover the real differences between the sexes.

Engineer Lloyd finds out whats missing in him. Bickering couple Liz and Craig squabble over whos the most empathic until a stunning brain scan settles the argument. And in a television first we reveal the true effects of sex hormones on the brain by following 29-year-old Max as, under the influence of monthly testosterone injections, she turns from a woman into a man.
Attraction

Can science predict sexual attraction? In a ground-breaking experiment, a team of scientists orchestrate a unique speed date with a hundred singletons to test their theories with unexpected results. The scientists analyse our speed-daters bodies, faces, and psychological and social profiles to find out what the key predictors of sexual chemistry really are.

Looking for love is 32-year-old Beth Eagland. Shes on a mission to find a husband but after four years of singles parties and surfing the net she has struck out. Peter Kerr is a 37-year-old politics lecturer who can never get beyond being just friends.

Our scientists believe they can find them the perfect mate where orthodox match-making methods have failed.
Love

Half of all new marriages end in divorce but scientists say theyve found the secret of long lasting love. They claim theyve identified how love works and can even tell which marriages will make it. If so, can they save couples whose relationships are on the brink of collapse?

Lyn and Alan have bickered for 21 years and are contemplating divorce. Hayley and Jay have been married for seven years, but Jays recent affair has put their marriage under intolerable pressure. Along with starry-eyed newly weds, Steve and Donna, our warring couples go through a battery of experiments to see whats going wrong.

We find out whether being out of love affects how we physically see our partner, and in one of the most daunting stress tests known to psychologists, how our physiological reactions to conflict threaten love. Armed with new understanding of each others biochemical and psychological behaviour, Lyn and Alan, Hayley and Jay embark on a programme designed to rescue their relationships.

BBC Spy (2004) complete

Spy
BBC3, October 2004
10 parts x 1 hour each

Ever wondered what it would be like to be a spy? Is being a spy really all about gadgets and exotic locales? Images of a suave James Bond in exotic locations, beautiful women, dangerous situations and high-tech gadgetry spring to mind? But it can't really be like that, can it? Surely Bond's colleagues don't get a leg over nearly so often and they can't all get the glamour assignments.

Eight members of the public get the chance to find out as they undergo training in the art of subterfuge. Spy is a 10-part series that will blow the lid on the secret world of intelligence and espionage. The programme gives ordinary people the chance to inhabit a world they have only ever read about or seen on screen. Undergoing rigorous training parallel to that of intelligence operatives all over the world, eight candidates have the chance to leave their old lives behind, relocate to a new city and assume a whole new identity...
The Selection Process

How does one become a spy, in any event? Over 5000 people responded to a series of adverts placed in the press at the end of 2003, to be given the opportunity of a crash course in espionage to see if they really have what it takes. The applicants knew that they wouldnt really be defending Queen and country but that the course was designed to be as close as possible to the sort of training that a real intelligence officer would go through, but in a much shorter timescale of two months. The experts, whod be training the final eight are all experts in their field.

The team of experts were looking for people of all ages, and from all walks of life to take part - there's no definitive blueprint for the perfect spy. Just those who can cut it and those who can't. The experts looked for the key skills needed to make a good spy. A series of questions and exercises, including psychometric, IQ and character tests, as well as perception challenges, were designed to test all applicants. At sessions around the country, the experts monitored these exercises in order to single out those who showed the most potential. Only eight were chosen to trade their world for a shadowy underworld...

With discretion being a vital quality needed for the job the candidates were only able to tell one other person what they were really doing. For everyone else they had to invent plausible reasons to explain their absence from home and work for a period of two months. One claimed that he was going on safari to Africa, several that they were doing a career development course and two claimed that they were going to be in New York for the period, a plan which nearly came unstuck when friends and family promised to visit!

Spy school HQ was based at a secret location in central London. The fast-track training, which took place over the course of two months, consisted of tests, missions and challenges. All of the theoretical training gained in the classroom proved essential when they were thrown in at the deep end during real-life challenges.

Its a grey day in early March and eight people, who have only just met one another, are waiting nervously in a caf in West London. One by one they are given the number of a flat on a housing estate and given just ten minutes to talk their way into the property. Theres a lot of nervous laughter, and anxiety about the best way to approach the job. Theyre reminded that theyre only to use persuasion, and that they must under no circumstances use any threatening language or physical intimidation. Theyre not door to door salespeople, theyre trainees on a two month crash course in espionage, and its their first day on the job. The task theyve been set is not just to talk their way into the property, they also have to gain access to the balcony at the rear of the property and be seen there drinking a glass of water with the owner.

Sounds tricky? Its a allegedly exactly how Mossad (the Israeli Intelligence Service) sizes up their raw recruits on their first day before theyve received any formal training at all. What they and their counterparts in other intelligence services are looking for, is the right mixture of nerve, charm and the ability to think on your feet that no amount of classroom training can give.

The recruits quickly learned that charm could only get them so far, attention to detail, planning and hard graft were also a vital part of their training. When travelling undercover a real spy can have nothing that links him to his old life and family or he risks placing not only himself and his mission but also those he loves at risk. On their first day several of the recruits were caught out letting their real names slip, or having items in their position that could easily link them to their former lives, but they were quick learners and burning confidential documents, and committing details to memory soon became second nature to most of them. They learned about surveillance, and how to spot if youre being watched, they learned how to go grey and blend into a crowd, how to plant bugs and tracking devices, and how to cultivate unsuspecting people and get them to do what they wanted. The recruits also faced extra pressure as they underwent continuous assessment from their tutors.
Who has the makings of a spy?

Intelligence and its failings are so much in the spotlight at the moment but for most of us knowledge of what makes a good spy begins and ends with the need for a well cut tuxedo and a penchant for vodka martinis shaken, not stirred. With MI5 and the CIA talking publicly about the need for more and better intelligence officers, what qualities do they require and what training do the raw recruits get?

It's the nitty-gritty details that are the stock in trade of spooks who plan to survive until their next mission. The series has a competitive element - to see who's really got what it takes to turn raw talent into skill in the field. And just like real spies, there are times when the recruits work together to achieve their objectives.

But they may also have to choose between loyalty to the other candidates and achieving their own goals. At the end of the course, they take part in a full-scale operation, competing against each other. Only then will they know what it truly takes to make it as a spy.

Did any of them get out onto the balconies on that very first day and at the end of the training would any of them want to do the job for real? For some the answer to both questions is a resounding yes, but for others the reality of their experience was not something theyd want to repeat.

Poet Simon Armitage goes on the trail of one of the jewels in the crown of British poetry, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, written about 600 years ago by an unknown author. The poem has got just about everything - it is an action-packed adventure, a ghost story, a steamy romance, a morality tale and the world's first eco-poem.

Armitage follows in the footsteps of the poem's hero, Gawain, through some of Britain's most beautiful and mystical landscapes and reveals why an absurd tale of a knight beheading a green giant is as relevant and compelling today as when it was written.

The Pharaoh Who Conquered the Sea
Over three thousand years ago, legend has it that Queen Hatshepsut, Egypt's first female pharaoh, sent a fleet of ships to the wonderful, distant land of Punt. A bas-relief in the temple where she is entombed in Luxor shows them bringing back extraordinary treasures. But did this expedition really happen? And if it did, where exactly is the land of Punt?

Drawing upon recent finds, the archaeologist Cheryl Ward sets out to recreate the voyage, in a full-size replica of one of these ancient ships, sailing it in the wake of Hatshepsut's fleet, in search of the mythical land of Punt. A human adventure as well as a scientific challenge, the expedition proves that, contrary to popular belief, the ancient Egyptians had the necessary tools, science and techniques to sail the seas.

Botany: A Blooming History
BBC4, Tuesday 7 June, 14 June, 21 June 2011

Botany A Blooming History reveals how a band of pioneers came to understand the mysteries of the plant kingdom and, in doing so, helped to unlock the secrets of the natural world.

Presented by Timothy Walker, the director of Oxford University Botanic Garden, this new three-part series features tales of ingenuity and intellectual rivalry. It tells the story of how people came to understand the natural order of the plant world and how the quest to discover how plants grow uncovered the secret to life on the planet.

The series features the latest plant science and shows how botanists today are at the forefront of advances which fight disease, provide radical new forms of renewable energy and help feed the world's growing population.
Episode 1 - A Confusion of Names
Timothy reveals how the breakthroughs of botanist Carl Linnaeus and naturalist John Ray moved the variation in plants from a matter of religious faith to a scientific discipline. When nurseryman Thomas Fairchild created the world's first man-made hybrid flower an entirely new plant that didn't exist in nature he set botany a challenge to discover how plants breed and how they are related. It was a botanist, William Bateson, who invented the term "genetics". He discovered how living things pass on their characteristics from generation to generation.
Episode 2 - Photosynthesis
The air we breathe, and all the food we eat, is created from water, sunlight, carbon dioxide and a few minerals. That's it, nothing else. It sounds simple, but this process is one of the most fascinating and complicated in all of science. Without it there could be no life on earth. It's that important.

For centuries people believed that plants grew by eating soil. In the 17th century, pioneer botanists began to make the connection between the growth of a plant and the energy from the sun. They discovered how plants use water, sunlight and carbon dioxide to produce sugars - how, in fact, a plant grows.

The process of photosynthesis is still at the heart of scientific research today. Universities across the world are working hard to replicate in the lab what plants do with ruthless efficiency. Their goal is to produce a clean, limitless fuel and if they get it right it will change all our lives.
Episode 3 - Hidden World
For 10,000 years or more, humans created new plant varieties for food by trial and error and a touch of serendipity. Then 150 years ago, a new era began. Pioneer botanists unlocked the patterns found in different types of plants and opened the door to a new branch of science - plant genetics. They discovered what controlled the random colours of snapdragon petals and the strange colours found in wild maize.

This was vital information. Some botanists even gave their lives to protect their collection of seeds. American wheat farmer Norman Borlaug was awarded the Nobel peace prize after he bred a new strain of wheat that lifted millions of people around the world out of starvation. Today, botanists believe advances in plant genetics hold the key to feeding the world's growing population.

415 BBC What the Romans Did for Us (2000) complete

What the Romans Did for Us, is a 2000 BBC documentary series that examines the impact of the Romans on modern society.

The name of the programme is derived from the cult movie Monty Python's Life of Brian, referencing the famous scene where the People's Front of Judea discuss "What have the Romans done for us?"

From frescoes to fast food, bridges to bikinis, the Romans brought us a variety of innovations that changed the landscape of Britain and the lifestyle of its inhabitants for ever. The Romans were mass-producers, capitalists and bureaucrats who during their 400-year stay in Britain built dozens of towns and miles of roads, leaving a fascinating and complex legacy that forms the basis of much of our technology today. Presented by Adam Hart-Davis, "What The Romans Did For Us" investigates the innovations that Romans brought to our shores and assesses their considerable impact on our lives. It features demonstrations and reconstructions of extraordinary Roman devices, and provides an alternative, dynamic history of the people that transformed Britain.
