David Attenborough's Madagascar

Like nowhere else on Earth, the mystery and magic of Madagascar leaves a vivid impression on all those who visit, and none more so than David Attenborough. Fifty years ago, Sir David went to film on the island for the early wildlife TV series Zoo Quest. With several return visits over the intervening years for numerous TV productions, the country and its wildlife has continued to capture both his and his audience's imagination. This video clip collection pulls together some of the best moments from those Madagascar films, captured over a time that has seen great changes both to the island itself and in wildlife film-making.

417 BBC State of the Planet (2007)

Everywhere you turn there is confusion about the current state of our planet; with talk of rainforest destruction, global warming, extinction of species, rising sea levels and drought. In this series David Attenborough brings his matter-of-fact clarity to the subject, investigating the latest scientific research to explain the situation in simple terms for the first time.

Over the course of three programmes, his quest takes him on a truly global trail, from Kenya to Ecuador, from the Phillipines and the Maldives to Easter Island, and from South Africa to California.

418 BBC A South American Journey (2011)

A South American Journey with Jonathan Dimbleby
Jonathan Dimbleby travels to South America to report on dramatic changes in one of the world's least understood continents After his journeys across Russia and Africa, Jonathan Dimbleby turns his attention to South America. Once notorious for drugs and dictators, the continent still faces daunting challenges but Dimbleby also finds energy and optimism in this 21st century New World.
Episode 1: Chile and Bolivia
He travels from south to north through a continent that is a constant source of drama and surprise. In Chile, he discovers a nation transformed since the demise of the dictator General Pinochet, but still working to heal the scars left by his rule. He meets the editors of a satirical magazine called The Clinic in Santiago, before heading out into the heart of 'old' South America to ride with Chile's first female rodeo rider. Further north, he crosses the Atacama Desert, the driest in the world, riding a copper train through the wilderness to the ghost town of Chacabuco. Here he meets Chilean poet Jorge Monteleagre, who tells Dimbleby how under Pinochet the town was turned into a concentration camp where he was detained. Dimbleby goes on to reach the Pacific Ocean where he finds fishermen harvesting seaweed which is exported to China. From Chile, Dimbleby heads for the capital of Bolivia, La Paz. Here he meets child-labourers who have formed a trade union. Plus two sisters from the once-persecuted Indian community who compete in wrestling matches to assert their national identity teach him in the intricacies of their martial art. High in the Andes he encounters farmers who cultivate the coca plant from which cocaine is derived but which is also the source of coca tea, Bolivia's national drink. And deep in the Amazon rainforest he finds a remarkable music school where they perform classical works brought to Bolivia three centuries ago by Jesuit priests from Europe.
Episode 2: Colombia and Venezuela
On the second leg of his journey Jonathan travels across Colombia and Venezuela, South America's Caribbean giants, and discovers that they have strikingly divergent modern realities. Colombia, for so long synonymous with drug wars, is also a country of hope, vibrancy and resilience. In Jonathan's search for the stories that define a country emerging from decades of violence, he cycles with a visionary mayor around the streets of Bogot? and visits six million dollar homes in the city's booming property market. He meets a reformed FARC fighter making his way in the high-end restaurants of the city and journeys to a remote coffee farm in the Andes. In Medell?n, the infamous fiefdom of Pablo Escobar, he comes face to face with the legacy of violence in the town cemetery, and ends his Colombian journey with a group of breakdancing kids, the new heroes of the notorious hillside slums. In Venezuela, a country vastly rich in oil reserves and dominated by its socialist leader Hugo Chavez, Jonathan searches for a sense of the real Venezuela. On his journey he finds himself in the midst of a sea of red shirts at an anti-US, pro-Chavez rally; he joins a police patrol in a crime-ridden neighbourhood of Caracas; rides with cowboys on the plains; fishes with fishermen in a socialist cooperative; and tastes the world's finest chocolate bean. Along the way he discovers a polarised country where all is not always as it seems. He ends his journey through Venezuela listening to the music of an inspirational youth orchestra drawn from two previously warring neighbourhoods. They are the product of Venezuela's extraordinary 'El Sistema', a programme that offers free classical music training and instruments to a quarter of a million young people from all backgrounds.
Episode 3: Brazil
Dimbleby embarks on a 6000-mile journey through Brazil, the continent's largest country and home to 190 million people. Nowhere is evidence of the economic boom in South America more apparent, but Jonathan finds the road to riches is paved with dilemmas for both Brazil and the wider world. In the Amazon, architects and cattle ranchers are grappling with environmental tension. On the coast, descendants of runaway slaves are fighting the expansion of a satellite launch facility to protect their land. And in Rio, Jonathan joins the commander of a new police force as they seek to pacify the slums ruled by the law of the drug lords.

Dr Vivian Davies claims that a recently discovered set of hieroglyphs proves that, in 800 BC, Egypt was under the rule of black Pharaohs from neighbouring Nubia. This film examines the impact of these sensational discoveries.

Příspěvek 420 BBC Frank Lloyd Wright Murder Myth and Modernism (2005)

BBC Frank Lloyd Wright Murder Myth and Modernism (2005)

The American icon behind the Guggenheim museum, Fallingwater and his own home, Taliesin, Frank Lloyd Wright became the greatest architect of the 20th century - not only because of his magnificent talent but because he was a master showman and self-publicist.

The sheer scale of Lloyd Wright's career over 450 buildings in 70 years is astonishing in itself but there is much more to his story than the romantic myth his autobiography revealed.

This new documentary, accompanying the BBC TWO series Marvels Of The Modern Age, explores Lloyd Wright's visionary works and reveals how his life was beset with periods of devastating critical derision, financial chaos, scandal, and a violent but little-known murder.

On 15 August 1914, Frank Lloyd Wright was at his office in Chicago. 140 miles away, at their home in Wisconsin, his mistress, Mamah Borthwick-Cheney, sat down to lunch with her two children. In another room were six of Wrights staff tradesmen and studio workers. After serving the meals, Wrights servant, Julian Carleton, quietly bolted the doors and windows, poured gasoline around the outside of the house, and set it alight.

As the house began to burn, he took a hatchet and attacked and murdered Mamah and her children she was killed where she sat. He then went after the workmen. Herbert Fritz and Billy Weston escaped by smashing through a window. They were the only survivors that day. At his office, Wright received a phone call telling him only that there had been a fire but when he arrived at the train station he learned the full story from waiting reporters.

The brutal murders were the final tragic act in a story of adultery and intrigue that had scandalised polite society for the previous five years. Wright was grief-stricken but refused to be defeated he vowed to rebuild Taliesin. This is the story of how Wright rebuilt his life and reputation on the site of his greatest tragedy, the house that he called Taliesin. Wrights own account of his life is notoriously unreliable, but he revealed himself most clearly in the houses he built, and most of all in Taliesin.

If the Guggenheim is his epitaph, this is his biography. For half a century, Taliesins changing fortunes followed Wrights own and it ultimately inspired the act of creative genius that justified Frank Lloyd Wrights assessment of himself as the worlds greatest architect.

A World of Wonder production.

BBC Cutty Sark National Treasure (2012)

DOCUMENTARY: Cutty Sark - National Treasure
On: BBC 2
Date: Friday 3rd February 2012
Time: 21:00 to 22:00

The fastest ship of its kind. A national treasure. A symbol of the role of the sea in our nations history. All this and more is true of the magnificent tea clipper Cutty Sark, but boy, she has cost a lot to restore.

A six-year process originally budgeted at a whopping L25 million will have cost double that by the time the ship reopens to the public later this year. And watching this programme about the meticulous, plank-by-plank conservation process (cruelly interrupted by a fire in 2007), you can see why.

Its strangely fascinating to watch how they re-do the original oakum and pitch caulking and use a deep-fat fryer to help parcel the rigging, and so on. But just as interesting are the fraught ups and downs of the project as a whole. As one carpenter puts it, You cant help but invest in it emotionally.

This documentary follows the restoration of the clipper ship after she was ravaged by fire in May 2007, offering an insight into the pioneering techniques and traditional skills used by conservationists to preserve her authenticity. The programme also charts the vessel's globe-trotting adventures from her launch in 1869. Featuring interviews with the people responsible for the Cutty Sark's rebirth, including Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.

THE PRE-RAPHAELITES
"Toward the middle of the 19th century, a small group of young artists in England reacted vigorously against what they felt was "the frivolous art of the day": this reaction became known as the Pre-Raphaelite movement. Their ambition was to bring English art (such as it was) back to a greater "truth to nature." They deeply admired the simplicities of the early 15th century, and they felt this admiration made them a brotherhood. Bursting into the spotlight in 1848 and shocking their peers with a new kind of radical art.
This is a three-part series examining the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.

Part 1: The Brotherhood
The opening part explores the origins of the Brotherhood and their initial achievements, and looks at some of their key early works, the hostile criticism they faced and the centuries of academic dogma their paintings overturned.

Part 2: Landscape Painting
This second part looks at how they continued by transforming landscape painting with a microscopic examination of the natural world, some ten years before the French Impressionists.

Part 3: Mass Production
This final part looks at how the Pre-Raphaelites had outgrown the avant-garde in their later years and began to embrace fame and fortune with art designed to please the masses.

BBC Being Neil Armstrong (2009)

It has been said that ten thousand years from now, only one name will still be remembered - that of Neil Armstrong. But in the four decades since he first set foot on the moon, Armstrong has become increasingly reclusive.
Andrew Smith, author of the best-selling book Moondust, journeys across America to try and discover the real Neil Armstrong. He tracks down the people who knew Armstrong, from his closest childhood friend to fellow astronauts and Houston technicians, and even the barber who sold his hair, in a wry and sideways look at the reluctant hero of the greatest event of the twentieth century.

426 BBC Twenties in Colour (2007)

Part 1: Europe After the Fire
First Aired on BBC Four, Thu 8 Nov, 20:00-21:00

Series examining Albert Kahn's ambitious Archives of the Planet project, in which he sent photographers, armed with the world's first user-friendly colour photographic system, around the world to document all aspects of human life.

When the Armistice was signed in November 1918, Kahn's team photographed the scenes of jubilation in Paris as they witnessed the negotiations at the Paris Peace Conference and recorded the horrifying aftermath of four years of war.

Part 2: Middle East the Birth of Nations
First Aired on BBC Four, Thu 15 Nov, 20:00-21:00

The First World War led to the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire and its former provinces came under the control of France and Britain. Albert Kahn's cameras were there to record the establishment of new nations.
Part 3: Far East Expeditions to Empires
First Aired on BBC Four, Thu 22 Nov, 20:00-21:00

Between 1914 and 1928, Kahn sent some of his most talented photographers to the Far East. In Cambodia, Vietnam and Japan, they produced a compelling photographic record of economic and cultural life, subsistence industries, and ceremonial practices, and produced a fascinating portrait of the life of a wealthy Maharajah in India during the British Raj.
Part 4: The End of a World
First Aired on BBC Four, Thu 29 Nov, 20:00-21:00

The last programme in the series shows the films shot by Kahn's cameraman Lucien Le Saint who joined the French fishing fleets in Newfoundland, the film and colour autochromes shot by Frederic Gadmer who recorded Voodoo religious practices in Benin and the experimental colour films produced by Camille Sauvageot in 1928, depicting the lives of farmers, Gypsies and bullfighters in France.

The Mother of all Collisions Physical World (1992)

Programme for the second level course S207. About the Large Hadron Collider at CERN which will be used to probe the nature of sub-atomic particles, at a cost of some $6 billion and with the involvement of an international team of more than 2,000 scientists. One of the questions they will seek to answer is: what makes things heavy? Discusses what this simple but profound question has to do with the design of airbags and seatbelts, and reveals that the fundamental laws of conservation connect all collisions big and small, from passengers to elementary particles.

BBC Atom (2007)

428 BBC Atom (2007)

A landmark three-part series for BBC Four's Science You Can't See Season charts the extraordinary and awe-inspiring story of humanity's greatest-ever scientific revelation the atom.

Presented by author and nuclear physicist Professor Jim Al-Khalili, the programme explores the bizarre world of the atom. Only one tenth of a millionth of a millimetre across, the atom shattered the whole edifice of physics and turned 3,000 years of philosophy on its head. Atoms are the building blocks of the world and their discovery has helped our understanding of the universe. Even today, as scientists continue to peer deeper and deeper inside it, it throws back as many questions as it answers.

Episode 1: "The Clash of The Titans"

The discovery that everything is made from atoms has been referred to as the greatest scientific breakthrough in history. As scientists delved deep into the atom, they unravelled nature's most shocking secrets and abandoned traditional beliefs, leading to a whole new science which still underpins modern physics, chemistry and biology, and maybe even life itself. Nuclear physicist Professor Jim Al-Khalili tells the story of this discovery and the brilliant minds behind the breakthrough.
Episode 2: "The Key to The Cosmos"

The second in Professor Jim Al-Khalili's three-part documentary about the basic building block of our universe, the atom. He shows how, in our quest to understand the tiny atom, we unravelled the mystery of how the universe was created - a story with dramatic twists and turns, taking in world-changing discoveries like radioactivity, the atom bomb and the Big Bang, as the greatest brains of the 20th century competed to answer the biggest questions of all - why are we here and how were we made.
Episode 3: "The Illusion of Reality"

The final part of Professor Jim Al-Khalili's documentary series about the basic building block of our universe, the atom. He explores how studying the atom forced us to rethink the nature of reality itself, discovers how there might be parallel universes in which different versions of us exist and finds out that 'empty' space isn't empty at all. Al-Khalili shows how the world we think we know turns out to be a tiny sliver of an infinitely weirder universe than which we could have conceived.

Nature's Weirdest Events
Chris Packham presents this documentary investigating unusual natural events, with the help of eyewitness accounts, scientists and footage of the occurrences. The phenomena he explores include a storm that turned Sydney crimson, moths that cocooned a car in Holland, a case of exploding toads and disturbing plagues of mice and locusts.

Part 1:
In the first programme of this two-part series, Chris Packham takes us around the world to the scene of some of the weirdest natural events on the planet. With the help of footage taken by eyewitnesses and news crews, he unravels the facts and the science behind each phenomenon. There is the mysterious case of the car cocooned by caterpillars in Holland, and the baffling case of the exploding toads in Germany. In Switzerland a lakeside town is entombed in ice and a once in a lifetime storm turns Sydney, Australia crimson overnight. There are some disturbing plagues of mice and locusts and a swarm of ladybirds. And finally there are extraordinary strandings of starfish, crabs and whales. Chris tells the real story of the events behind the headlines and helps to explain what on earth happened.

Part 2:
The second in this two-part series about the weirdest natural events on the planet features the incredible sea foam which turns part of the Australian coast into what looks like the world's biggest bubble bath. Plus there is a look at the mysterious death of thousands of sea birds on America's west coast, and the otherworldly phenomenon known as milky seas. Other strange events include thousands of birds falling from the sky in America, causing panic and predictions of the apocalypse among the residents, and the fish that fell from the sky in south London. And finally there is the story of the truly terrifying holes which open up in the earth's crust and swallow not only buildings, but in the case of a nature reserve in Florida, an entire lake
